The British shifted the capital of India to New Delhi in 1911. The British architects Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker were commissioned to design the new capital. The construction began in 1911, it took nearly 20 years to build and the city was formally innaugrated in 1931. India Gate is a majestic 43 metres high arch, built as a memorial to the 90,000 Indian soldiers killed in World War I. It is located at the eastern end of Rajpath, the venue of the annual parade held on 26th Januray, India's Republic Day. The names of the fallen soldiers are engraved on the stones. The lawns around India Gate are the favoured picnic spot for Delhi families and the area tends to gets quite busy at night.
I went there several times during my visit to delhi, India. It was nice but these days only students who bunk from school go there. or people from different parts of india who come to delhi visit it. its very crowded at night and best time to visit it during october- november, when its not very hot. lots of street vendors. i have noticed one more thing there. while resting in the parks beside India Gate, all the street vendors like tea, snacks and ice cream vendors bug you a lot. they come to you every 1 minute in the park and bug you. you can also do boating there, but the water is dirty and you can see people bathing in it.
there is parliament near India Gate. You can go for long walk if weather permits.
Must visit this place if going to New Delhi.
